The mountain

Taal Volcano311 m

Taal Volcano is a caldera holding Taal Lake in Batangas, some 50 km south of Manila, and ranks second in the country for volcanic activity, with 39 eruptions on record, most of them on Volcano Island. Mt. Batulao, Sungay and Macolod are cones left from the older Taal system that came before the caldera. Volcano Island tops out at about 311 m, where the 1.7 km Daang Kastila trail took about 45 minutes before the closure, and its crater lake, about 2 km wide, holds the islet of Vulcan Point. PHIVOLCS bars all entry to Volcano Island, its Permanent Danger Zone, especially around the fissure at Daang Kastila and the Main Crater (Alert Level 1, 26 October 2025).
