The mountain

Mt. Pinatubo1,486 m

Mt. Pinatubo, a stratovolcano that is still active, stands in the Zambales Mountains where Zambales, Tarlac and Pampanga meet. Its VEI-6 eruption on 15 June 1991, the second-largest on land in the 20th century, left a lower crater rim and a caldera that filled with rain to become Lake Pinatubo. The lake's water ranges from blue to green to brown and turns cyan between December and February. Tourists usually reach the lake via Capas, Tarlac, through Santa Juliana, and Aeta communities protested in April 2025 over being shut out of the tourism income.
