An inactive stratovolcano, Mt. Batulao stands 811 m high in northwest Batangas by the Cavite border, at the northwestern rim of the Taal system. Two trails, the Old Trail on the east and the New Trail on the west, start from Evercrest Golf Course in Nasugbu and join at the summit rocks; it is a very popular dayhike near Manila, and hundreds may camp there on weekends. The slopes are open grassland, exposed to sun and wind and muddy from June to October, and the many ups and downs keep the net gain from jump-off to summit under 300 m. The summit looks out over Taal Lake, Balayan Bay, the Tagaytay highlands, the Calatagan peninsula and Mt. Talamitam.
