A night-start dayhike over six peaks of the Cawag area in Subic, starting between 1:30 and 3:00 AM so that Balingkilat is reached around sunrise, three to four and a half hours in. The whole traverse takes roughly 14 to 22 hours, so go with a guide, enough water and a headlamp.

Timetable

  1. The night before

    1. 19:30Meet up in Metro Manila (Cubao) between 7:30 and 8:00 PM for final preparations.
    2. 20:30Depart for Subic, Zambales between 8:30 and 10:00 PM.

  2. Day 1

    1. 01:00Arrive at Sitio Cawag between 1:00 and 1:30 AM; register (mandatory at the Subic Fire Station, ₱60 each), attend the orientation and take a guide.
    2. 01:30Start trekking in the dark across grassland between 1:30 and 3:00 AM.
    3. 04:30Reach the first water source at Kawayanan.
    4. 05:45Reach the summit of Mt. Balingkilat between 5:45 and 6:00 AM for sunrise and breakfast; the final stretch is steep boulder scrambling.
    5. 08:00Reach Mt. Bira-Bira between 8:00 and 8:30 AM.
    6. 09:20Reach Mt. Naulaw between 9:20 and 10:00 AM.
    7. 10:30Refill at the second water source and have an early lunch between 10:30 and 11:00 AM.
    8. 12:00Reach Mt. Dayungan between 12:00 and 1:30 PM.
    9. 14:00Reach the Cinco Picos campsite and Mt. Cinco Picos between 2:00 and 3:30 PM.
    10. 16:45Reach Mt. Redondo across a long grass stretch.
    11. 17:00Start the descent toward the Sitio Cawag jump-off.
    12. 18:00Back at the jump-off between 6:00 and 8:00 PM; wash up and have dinner.
    13. 22:00Depart for Manila between 10:00 and 10:30 PM.

  3. Day 2

    1. 03:00Arrive back in Manila.
