Mt. Fato via Maligcong Terraces Trail: 2D1N itinerary

From Bontoc · Fato afternoon, Kupapey sunrise

A weekend trip based at a Maligcong homestay: Mt. Fato in the afternoon of day one and Mt. Kupapey before dawn on day two, each roughly an hour and a half from the village. Some groups instead link the two peaks in one early morning traverse. Camping is not allowed, so you sleep in the village.

Timetable

  1. The night before

    1. 23:00Take the night bus from Cubao to Baguio.

  2. Day 1

    1. 05:00Arrive in Baguio.
    2. 06:30Leave Baguio for Bontoc along the Halsema Highway.
    3. 08:00Stop at the Halsema Highway marker.
    4. 12:00Arrive in Maligcong, settle in at a homestay and arrange guides there.
    5. 15:00Start the climb of Mt. Fato through pine forest.
    6. 16:30Reach the Mt. Fato summit after some rock scrambling.
    7. 17:00Start the descent.
    8. 18:30Back at the homestay for dinner; lights go off around 9:00 PM.

  3. Day 2

    1. 03:30Wake up and meet the guide.
    2. 03:45Start the climb of Mt. Kupapey in the dark.
    3. 05:30Reach the Mt. Kupapey summit between 5:30 and 5:45 AM and wait for sunrise.
    4. 07:00Start the descent.
    5. 08:00Come down through the rice terraces.
    6. 09:00Back at the homestay for breakfast.
    7. 10:00Leave Maligcong by jeep for Bontoc between 10:00 and 10:30 AM.
    8. 13:00Take the afternoon bus from Bontoc to Baguio, then travel on to Manila.
