A two- to three-day trip from the Panorama Viewpoint on the Halsema Highway in Sabangan, with a night at Apa campsite before the summit day. The climb takes about 6.5 hours to the top, through mossy forest with leeches and hunter traps, so go with local guides and keep to the trail.

Timetable

  1. Day 1

    1. 00:00Take the night bus from Manila to Baguio.
    2. 06:15Board the first Baguio–Sagada bus at Dangwa Station.
    3. 11:00Get off at Panorama Viewpoint on the Halsema Highway in Sabangan and have lunch.
    4. 12:30Register, meet the guides and start the trek to Apa campsite.
    5. 13:00Reach the Chico River crossing.
    6. 14:00Arrive at Apa campsite and set up camp.
    7. 15:00Explore the nearby rivers.
    8. 18:00Dinner and bonfire at camp.

  2. Day 2

    1. 05:00Wake-up call.
    2. 06:00Start the summit trek from Apa.
    3. 08:00Reach Hunters' Camp (about 1,950 m).
    4. 09:00Reach about 2,200 m in the mossy forest.
    5. 11:00Summit of Mt. Kalawitan; explore the dwarf bamboo forest and swamps.
    6. 12:00Lunch at the summit.
    7. 13:00Start the descent.
    8. 17:00Back at Apa campsite for the night.
    9. 18:00Dinner and bonfire at camp.

  3. Day 3

    1. 05:00Wake-up call.
    2. 06:00Break camp and trek back toward Panorama Viewpoint.
    3. 07:30Arrive at Panorama Viewpoint.
    4. 10:00Take a bus to Sagada, Bontoc or Baguio, then onward to Manila.
