A two-day, one-night traverse of the Purgatory peaks in Bokod, from the Japas jump-off to Brgy. Ekip, about 24 to 26 km in all. The first day crosses Mangagew, Pack and Purgatory to a camp near Bakian or Tangbaw; the second goes to Komkompol and down to the exit. The main summit is about 7 hours from the start, and a one-day version is possible but runs up to about 12 hours. The traverse can also end at Karao instead of Ekip.

Timetable

  1. The night before

    1. 21:00Assemble at the Victory Liner terminal in Cubao.
    2. 22:00Board the night bus to Baguio.

  2. Day 1

    1. 03:30Arrive in Baguio between 3:30 and 5:00 AM.
    2. 05:30Have breakfast at Jang Jang eatery between 5:30 and 6:30 AM, then take the chartered jeep to Bokod.
    3. 07:30Arrive at the Japas jump-off between 7:30 and 7:50 AM; register (₱100 each) and attend the orientation with the guide.
    4. 08:00Start the trek.
    5. 09:00Reach Mt. Mangagew between 9:00 and 9:30 AM.
    6. 10:50Rest at Bagtinen campsite, then continue to the end of the road and the mossy forest.
    7. 11:30Lunch on the trail around 11:30 AM; resume by 12:55 PM.
    8. 12:30Reach Mt. Pack between 12:30 and 1:20 PM.
    9. 14:25Reach Mt. Purgatory around 2:30 PM.
    10. 15:50Refill water at the water source.
    11. 16:00Pass Mt. Bakian and the Bakian school between 4:00 and 4:30 PM.
    12. 17:00Reach Mt. Tangbaw campsite near the bunker house and set up camp.
    13. 18:00Dinner at camp; lights off around 10:00 PM.

  3. Day 2

    1. 04:00Wake up between 4:00 and 5:30 AM.
    2. 06:00Breakfast.
    3. 06:45Start for Mt. Komkompol on light packs between 6:45 and 7:20 AM.
    4. 07:30Summit of Mt. Komkompol between 7:30 and 8:12 AM.
    5. 09:15Back at Tangbaw camp around 9:15 AM; break camp and start the descent between 9:30 and 10:00 AM.
    6. 12:40Reach Brgy. Ekip, the end of the hike, between 12:40 PM and 1:00 PM.
    7. 13:30Ride to the Bokod municipal hall for the courtesy call and log-out.
    8. 14:00Wash up in Bokod, then take the jeep back to Baguio between 2:00 and 3:50 PM.
    9. 15:30Arrive in Baguio between 3:30 and 5:05 PM; dinner.
    10. 16:00Take the bus from Baguio to Manila between 4:00 and 7:30 PM; arrival in Manila is late night or early morning.
