Kala Patthar is the black rock ridge above Gorak Shep on the south ridge of Pumori, and the most accessible close-up view of Mt. Everest. The climb starts at Gorak Shep and usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours, ending with a short boulder scramble to a top marked with prayer flags. It is considered the highest point most trekkers reach without a climbing permit.
